ART AND DESIGN
OVERVIEW
Art and design lessons provide ambitious opportunities for children to work in ways that differ from other subject areas; in ways that support the development of well-rounded children. Within our school, art and design is employed to enable pupils to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of the world around them and to communicate their thoughts and ideas across the curriculum. All pupils are taught art, craft and design to engage, inspire and challenge them. Their developing knowledge, skills and understanding will equip them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils become artists and designers, they are taught to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. Through cross-curricular work, pupils learn that art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
INTENT
- To provide opportunities for children to share and discuss their subjective opinions about their own work and the work of others in ways that are respectful
- To enable pupils to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- To enable children become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques and experience success in the subject, with opportunities to recap and extend on prior learning
- To teach pupils how to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- To ensure that pupils know through exploration and reading, about great artists, craft makers and designers; both male and female and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
- Place art and design in a wider context, making it relatable for children by making links to current affairs and popular culture
- To support children in making links between art and design and their learning in; English, mathematics, geography, history and science
- To access deep learning and reach for the highest level of personal achievement; including the use of a range of strategies to identify gifted and talented children.
IMPLEMENTATION
- Allow opportunities for children to work both alone and collaboratively in an environment where they feel safe taking risks and are not intimidated by ‘getting it wrong’
- Progression in art and design is sequenced and mapped effectively across the key stages
- Pupils are taught to use a range of materials creatively to design and create, whilst making independent discoveries
- Children are given time to create with opportunities to review and refine their work
- Children learn how to use drawing, painting and 3D work to develop and share their ideas - both verbally and in written forms - to express their experiences and display imagination in an environment where all are valued
- Pupils are taught how to develop a wide range of art and design techniques, underpinned by the teaching of the visual elements of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
- Knowledge and skills are supported through the implementation of a progressive vocabulary structure, displayed and discussed as appropriate. Children are encouraged to use this when evaluating their own and others’ work
- Pupils will be taught to develop a wide range of skills and techniques, including the control and use of a variety of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different disciplines in art, craft and design
- Sketch books are used to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
- All children are encouraged and shown how to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and 3D work with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay, recycled materials]
- Children learn about the work of a wide range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices, disciplines and cultures. They will be encouraged to make links to artists’ work and their own work, both in their current projects and with their work in previous year groups to build upon prior learning
- Inform children about the creative industries and careers that exist and empower them to pursue creative endeavours within school and beyond.
IMPACT
Children will benefit from a rich, broad and balanced programme of art and design. Our art and design curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression.
We focus on progression of knowledge and skills and discreet vocabulary which also form part of the units of work. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Assessing children’s understanding of topic linked vocabulary before and after the unit is taught
- Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning
- Images and videos of the children’s practical learning
- Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice)
- Subject leader monitoring of standards
- Teacher dialogue where pupil’s work is scrutinised and there is the opportunity for teachers to understand their class’s work and develop curriculum opportunities further.
Children experience and experiment with a wide range of materials as they explore art and design to enable them to grow and flourish as artists and designers. They build a growing awareness of the art and design which runs through their own history, culture and other cultures as they are introduced to the world of artists and works of art. Children learn about sculptors, designers and architects and they will be taken to galleries, exhibitions and places rich in architectural heritage to broaden their horizons, appreciate great works of art and design and experience how art is integral to the success of our society.
